Nicole Kidman called on the world leaders to team up and fight the violence against women.
The actress, who became very dedicated to her role of ambassador for the U.N. Development Fund for Women, said during a news conference at U.N. headquarters that violence was the "most widespread human rights violation of our time."
"One in three women will encounter violence in some way, shape or form against them in their lifetime. That's an extraordinary statistic. Yet do we ever hear it?" Kidman told a news conference at the U.N. headquarters.
Kidman became a Goodwill Ambassador in January 2006 for the U.N. Development Fund for Women, known as UNIFEM.
The 40-year-old Australian actress joined UNIFEM's executive director Joanne Sandler Sandler, U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro, and U.N. Foundation President Timothy Wirth in promoting UNIFEM's "Say NO to Violence against Women" Campaign.
The campaign was launched in Nov. 26, 2006. Since then, the campaign’s Web site gathered the signatures of some 210,000 people who called on world leaders to fight violence against women.
As promised, the U.N. Foundation donated $1 to the fund for each of the first 100,000 signatures.
In her speech held on Tuesday at the U.N. headquarters, Kidman said that people all over the world should add their names on the Web site and demand "that ending violence against women be made a top priority for governments everywhere."
"Every voice counts and every amount counts," Kidman said
According to Sandler, the campaign already recorder some progress. He estimated that 89 countries have laws on domestic violence, more than 100 have made rape a crime, 90 have provisions against sexual harassment, and 93 on human trafficking.
Kidman is seven months pregnant. She is expecting her first child with country singer husband Keith Urban.
