A newborn baby managed to catch the eye of the media a few days ago, as his birth weight represents a new record for California.
The baby, named Richard Walker Sault, was born on December 23, 2008 at Saddleback Memorial Hospital in Laguna Hills. His size amazed the doctors, who had to perform a C-section to make sure that the 14-pounds and two ounces-baby will be delivered safely. For the ones having trouble with their calculus, this represents about 6.4 kilos and two doctors were needed to lift him up during the operation.
The parents were also surprised by the size, even though they expected him to be big and healthy: "Our daughter, she was a big girl and she walked at ten months. And Junior here looks like he could get up and walk out of the hospital right now," joked father Richard Sault, extremely happy with the successful procedure.
He also added that he and his wife considered their first baby a miracle, but their newborn took them by surprise. "… and now we have this little guy," he said, immediately correcting himself: "Guess he's not so little."
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the biggest surviving baby weighed 22.5 pounds. There have been other similar cases around the world, with a newborn in 2005 in Brazil that weighed 17 pounds and also a 13.75 pounds baby born in China.
