After the New York
crane accident which happened at the end of May, city officials started to raise
questions regarding the safety at construction sites.
According to NY1, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced
Wednesday afternoon a series of measures meant to improve safety for workers at
large construction sites.
The regulation will get tougher and constructions companies
which will not comply would face fines or have their permit revoked.
“We will suspend or revoke their ability to do business in New York City,” said
Robert LiMandri, the city's acting building department chief, reported Reuters.
This new regulation requires all contractors and subcontractors,
who are in the concrete and demolition business, to get a safety number from
the Buildings Department before beginning any kind of work. Also, construction
sites will be verified by a project safety monitor assigned by the Buildings
Department. The legislation mentions those contractors who have been told about
an “immediately hazardous violation” to report the time needed to correct the
violation. Workers would also have to be trained on the use of some tower
cranes.
Many city officials like Edward J. Malloy, president of the
New York State/City Construction Trades Councils; Gary La Barbera, president of
the New York City Central Labor Council; Steven M. Spinola, president of the
Real Estate Board of New York have approved of these measures and expressed
their support.
