Ruth Vered, an East Hampton art gallery owner was arrested
Saturday night for serving alcoholic drinks without a license at an opening
party for a celebrity photo exhibition.
All the 200 guests were shocked as police escorted Vered out
of the gallery. People were shouting, asking police to leave her alone, but
their efforts were in vain. Police knew what they had to do and they couldn’t
be stopped, although 67-year-old Vered explained to them she had been “doing
this since before they were born.” She also told police she was not selling
alcohol, as the wine and Champagne were for free.
East Hampton Mayor Paul Rickenbach said the cops were only
doing their duty, following a standard operating procedure that is usually done
in such cases.
The guests, who included fashion celebrities, were sipping
wine and cocktails as they admired photos of Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Brad
Pitt, Angelina Jolie, as well as photos of gay men in various sexual poses, when
two police officers interrupted the party. They asked Vered to stop serving
drinks, and when she refused, they told her she had to follow them to the
police station.
Vered, whose real name is Ruth Kalb, felt very offended by
their request and refused to follow the cops’ orders. Shortly after, nine
police cars and more than a dozen officers showed up at the gallery and
arrested the photographer. She was taken to the East Hampton Village Police
Department, where she was fingerprinted and photographed. Vered said she spent
about two hours at the police station and called the whole thing “ridiculous.”
"They're sabotaging the life of our small business.
Everybody does parties and gives Champagne. It's East Hampton!" she
declared, according to Newsday.
