The federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) launched March 31 a new online tool that provides “practical advice and hope” for anyone who goes through a tough time these days because of the negative effects of the economic crisis.
The guide is called “Getting Through Tough Economic Times” and is the result of a collaboration between SAMHSA, the Suicide Prevention Center and other government agencies. The guide is available at
www.samhsa.gov/economy/.
SAMHSA is a division of the Department of Health and Human Services that works to improve the lives of Americans with mental health or substance-abuse issues.
The main purpose of this guide is to help affected people identify and cope with serious health issues that result from so many financial worries.
“Economic turmoil (e.g., increased unemployment, foreclosure, loss of investments and other financial distress) can result in a whole host of negative health effects – both physical and mental. It can be particularly devastating to your emotional and mental we-being,” the Web page reads.
Stress is known as a major factor in developing depression, anxiety, compulsive behavior and substance abuse.
“By helping people remain resilient, we can help promote the overall recovery of our nation,” SAMHSA Acting Administrator Eric Broderick said.
The guide further teaches people how to recognize the above-mentioned conditions and encourages people to seek immediate help if they or someone they know seems to be at risk of the above-mentioned conditions.
