As the version 2.2.1 of the iPhone’s software, people got hyped to see what are the new features of the popular smartphone.
Nonetheless, there aren’t so many new features and in fact, the iPhone runs pretty much the same, besides some bug fixes and minor improvements. The version number indicates this, as the third digit shows that this is only an updated version of the v2.2 iPhone firmware.
However, the podcasting application suffered several important changes and now has extra features. It should also be noted that the podcasting application update would also bring some changes on the iTunes application on the Mac, in order to keep it up with the new iPhone features.
The most praised update of the podcasting application is the “get more episodes” button, which will link to the entire series of that podcast. Pressing the button will open the mobile iTunes that should link you to the other episodes, but it seems that this feature isn’t currently working that well, as podcasters don’t usually link each episodes to the entire series.
Another interesting update is the new order in which podcasts are now ordered, that is from oldest to newest. A nice touch is that all the episodes will be played automatically when the user selects the oldest podcast, eliminating the need to wander through the menu and create a playlist. Moreover, the iPod menu will automatically launch mobile Safari if the user selects the “search podcasts” in the menu.
Overall, many users will be satisfied with the new functionality of the iPod menu and especially the improvements of the podcast environment on the iPhone, but unhappily, there are still some software glitches to get used with.
