One of the most widespread conditions in the United States is obesity. Except for being a dangerous disease on its own, it is also one of the most important risk factors in developing heart diseases, it is also commonly associated with obesity.
The causes are diverse. Obesity in some people is genetic and is passed down from generation to generation. This is the toughest obesity to deal with, as patients have to be on a strict diet since childhood to avoid health problems.
Obesity, however, can also be caused by an unstable eating pattern, excessive consumption of fatty foods or junk foods, lack of physical exercise and even depression. Fighting this type of obesity that people exert on themselves is the toughest to fight, as it entails that the person suffering from obesity has to gather the willpower and discipline to overcome the disease.
Recently, however, researchers in the United States have discovered a treatment that may prove to be the best course for people dealing with obesity. The treatment seems to unlock a hormone, called leptin, that is responsible for suppressing appetite.
Unfortunately, leptin usually drops in intensity and efficiency in people who suffer from obesity. The good news is that a team from Harvard Medical School claims that they may have found a solution to this problem. Overweight mice that were given the drugs that are part of the treatment had a positive reaction, meaning that leptin started working again in their bodies. The researchers eagerly await the first trials on human patients.
