As Wireless Internet is becoming more common in many homes
and businesses making many people’s lives more efficient and productive, there
are still people who greatly disapprove of its use, sustaining it has bad repercussions
on their health.
This is the case of a group in Santa Fe, New Mexico,
which is seeking a ban on Wi-Fi signals in public buildings because they have
an allergic reaction to it, a report from local TV station KOB revealed.
According to the report, Arthur Furstenberg wants the city
to ban wireless Internet signals because he and others are allergic to the
radio waves. “I get chest pain. It doesn’t go away right away. I suffer for a
couple of days,” he told the TV station.
However, his opinion does not concord with a series of
studies on electromagnetic fields and the way they influence people’s health.
According to the World Health Organization, “a number of
studies have been conducted where [electromagnetic hypersensitivity] individuals
were exposed to [electromagnetic fields] similar to those that they attributed
to the cause of their symptoms. The aim was to elicit symptoms under controlled
laboratory conditions. The majority of studies indicate that EHS individuals
cannot detect EMF exposure any more accurately than non-EHS individuals. Well
controlled and conducted double-blind studies have shown that symptoms were not
correlated with EMF exposure,” the USA Today reports.
Still, the Santa Fe
city attorney is checking to see whether wireless Internet signals could be
considered a form of discrimination, KOB reports.
