O. J. Simpson’s trial on Thursday turned into another
problem than the one for which they were gathered there. Nine women and three
men were selected as jurors in the trial for the ex-American football player.
Still, the problem is that none of the eleven persons is
African American and this has lead to serious debates because the defense
accused the court of racial bias.
Simpson’s attorneys stated that the Africans Americans were
excluded because the prosecution has removed the lone black panelists who were
to be selected as a part of the jury. The new jury will be challenged again
because of the exclusion of the individual African Americans.
The judge told the Los Angeles Times that "there has
been no evidence to me that the state has made a purposeful discriminatory
effort to eliminate African American jurors." Simpson seemed very
preoccupied about the selection of the jury, but he seemed quite relaxed. The
opening statements are set to begin on Monday.
O. J. Simpson earned infamy when he was charged of murdering
his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1994. In
September 2007, the spokesman and broadcaster faced more legal problems.
He was arrested and charged with many felonies like robbery
with a deadly weapon, burglary with a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon and
first-degree kidnapping. The last charge could give him the life prison
sentence.
One year ago, Simpson, 61, robbed two sports memorabilia
dealers in a casino hotel room. The officials said that he had been accompanied
by six other men but Simpson denied having had any weapon and explained that he
was only trying to get back some things that the two had stolen from him.
