I bet Garrett Green thought that setting a fellow student's
turban on fire is damn funny. I also bet that, even after officials banned him
from school, he didn’t understand the gravity of his action.
The 18-year-old Hightstown high school senior won't be
allowed to attend the prom or graduation. He must have been devastated as the
prom could have given him the possibility to prove his wisdom once more.
Green torched a 16-year-old junior's turban with a cigarette
lighter during a fire drill last week. Fortunately, the victim kid who was a
member of the Sikh community wasn’t seriously hurt.
“It’s a bad day for New
Jersey, it’s a bad day for the Sikh community,” Sikh
Coalition legal director Amardeep Singh said, according to 7Online.
“Unfortunately, kids don't understand that making fun of a
somebody's turban is like calling an African-American student the N-word or
making an anti-Jewish epithet,” Singh added.
Green is due in court Wednesday on charges of arson and
criminal mischief.
The parents of the victim were very disturbed about the
event and said that education should also take care of teaching kids about
different religions.
After the incident, school officials are now hoping to
implement programs for their students.
