A 55-year-old dad was killed during a robbery at a Manhattan poker den where he was playing Friday night.
Frank Desena, 55, of Wayne, New Jersey, was accidentally killed Friday night at an unnamed Manhattan poker den when a gang of armed robbers stormed in and ran of with the money they found.
The New York Times reports that dozens of people were playing poker at the location, in an unmarked office on the seventh floor of a commercial building at 251 Fifth Avenue, at 28th Street, according to the police.
The group of robbers was made up of three or four men in ski masks and dark clothes, who entered the room after 11 p.m. A guard was allegedly posted on the ground floor in the lobby, some players told the Times.
A gunshot struck Desena in the torso; he was pronounced dead at St. Vincent’s Hospital shortly before midnight, police told the paper. The New York Daily news reports that one of the robbers dropped his gun and it went off accidentally, shooting Desena.
Desena was reportedly an avid card player, who even competed in the World Series of Poker, according to the Daily News. The Times was told by some of the players at the Manhattan den that the stakes were not high, ranging from a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars. One young woman told the paper that for her, poker games here were like a book club. “It was friendly, and everyone knows each other,” she said.
The Daily News reports that a funeral will be held Wednesday morning at the Vander May funeral home in Wayne, N.J. Desena is survived by his wife and teenage son. He had taught at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken.
