New Jersey Beach Closed after Syringes Found

An Ocean City beach was closed after several syringes and other medical waste was found in the sand, between 38th and 40th street beaches, 45th Street and one at 46th Street. The waste was detected during a routine sweep by lifeguards. Just days ago, two batches of medical waste were found washed up on the shores of Avalon.

The Attorney General's office announced a reward of $10,000 for anybody who can pinpoint the source of the dangerous incidents, although the Ocean City findings appear to be unrelated to the Avalon ones. City business administrator Jim Rutala said that the beach should be reopened Friday if no more dangerous items are found. In Avalon, as many as 200 syringes were found, but of a different type than those which showed up on the Ocean City shoreline.

Avalon beaches have been open since yesterday, but authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation and are regularly sweeping the beach. Anyone who finds potentially dangerous debris on the beach should call the Police Department at 609-399-9111.
