While Warner Bros. is currently dealing with hate mail from Harry Potter fans, due to their choice of postponing the release of the sixth Harry Potter movie, fans were given yet more reasons to be pissed. Electronic Arts Inc just announced the delay of its latest Harry Potter video game until next summer as well.
As it was widely rumored, EA and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced today that the game" Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" has also been postponed upon the delay of the movie, which was scheduled for a November 2008 release, before being pushed back to July 2009.
Alan Horn, president and chief operating officer, admitted in his August 14 statement that Warner Bros. was postponing the film because it could make more money out of a summer release saying that, "the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film". Shortly after, Horn issued an apology to fans, saying Warner Bros. "would certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films."
In a statement that is definitely not "intended" to upset anyone, Robert Nashak, vice president of EA Casual Studios, said that, "We're excited about the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince videogame in development and its high level of authenticity and playability,"
Developed by EA's Bright Light Studio, the team behind the worldwide success of the Harry Potter library of games including the most recent game released in the summer of 2007, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is scheduled for release for the Wii, PlayStation 3, a computer entertainment system, Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, PlayStation Portable system, Nintendo DS, Windows PC, Macintosh and mobile devices. The game offers several features that create an authentic head coaching experience. One of the game's most innovative and popular features is the ability to create custom plays and seamlessly import them into Madden NFL 09.
"We are creating an immersive game experience that Potter fans around the world will really enjoy playing as they fly and duel their way through the story of the film. The game will feature new Wii gestures and increased gameplay capabilities across all of the platforms," the statement added.
Angry reactions from fans started pouring in as soon as the news broke, consisting of multiple emails, petitions, YouTube videos all of which complaining about their decision to delay the release of the game.
Monday's announcement also triggered shares of EA to fall 3 percent, Reuters reported. EA said the title had been expected to generate $120 million in revenue and 13 cents a share in profit in its current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2009.
