Finally, four months ahead the release of the highly anticipated "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Price," the movie trailer emerged online revealing the little boy who grew up to become the most dangerous wizard of all time.
It's been a quiet year for Harry Potter fans after the seventh and final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," hit the shelves in July last year, but things just starting to heat up with anticipation of the sixth movie of the Harry Potter franchise.
Merely a teaser, as Rupert Grint, who plays Ron, one of Harry Potter's best friends, said, the trailer finds the famous teenage wizard plunging into one of Professor Dumbledore's most treasured memory: his first encounter with young Tom Riddle, who later took the name of Lord Voldemort.
Not many things are uncovered in the 1 minute 30 second video, but we get a clear look at 11-year-old Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, who suitably portrays Tom Riddle. Hero is the nephew of Ralph Fiennes, who is briefly seen in the trailer as the adult Voldemort.
"I can make things move without touching them," the young boy tells Dumbledore with an eerie voice. "I can make bad things happen to people who are mean to me."
"I can speak to snakes, too," he adds as the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry headmaster leaves the room. "They find me, whisper things."
Not only does Hero bear a resemblance to the grown-up Voldemort, but he also has the requisite intensity, director David Yates said.
"His mother (Martha Fiennes) is a film director, and Hero was very focused and disciplined," Yates explained. "The fact that he's related to Ralph wasn't the primary reason for choosing him. It was an advantage that he looked very similar to Ralph. Of course that was useful. But primarily I went for Hero because of this wonderful haunted quality that seemed to bring Tom Riddle alive on-screen for us."
Yates went on insisting how hard it can be for very young actors to find the necessary dark place to play such a creepy character.
"But even though he's the nicest child you'd ever want to meet, sweet-natured and pleasant, he got the corners and dark moods and odd spirit of the character. Even at a very young age, Tom Riddle shows tendencies toward cruelty and maliciousness," Yates said. "And it's a very unsettling thing to see."
While fans complained that the trailer shows far too little of their favorite characters, just three brief shots, one of Ron, one of McGonagall, and one of Ginny, most of them agreed that the video is very "intense" and "dark."
In addition to the young Tom Riddle, audiences will meet the teenage Voldemort, still known as Tom Riddl, played by Frank Dillane. The character made an appearance in the second Potter film, "Chamber of Secrets," played by a different actor.
Based on J.K. Rowling's sixth book, the film is scheduled to premiere on November 21, 2008.
