Wolfsburg, Germany - The new Golf VI generation has been given a top safety rating in the independent EuroNCAP crash test.

Testers described the model as an improvement on the predecessor Golf V, which scored lower marks against its main competitor, the Opel Astra.

The Golf scored 36 out of 37 possible points on occupant, pedestrian and child safety, with a maximum five-star rating for occupant safety.

Germany's automobile association ADAC said the Golf scored well on safety, particularly due to the addition of a knee-airbag as standard equipment for the driver. The improved crash zone around the steering wheel also boosted the safety score.

In the pedestrian protection segment, the Golf VI was awarded 22 out of 36 points and a total of three stars.

Testers criticized the lower frame structure of the windscreen and the bonnet hinges.
