The upcoming season’s contestants to ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” were announced on Sunday during an “All Night Name Drop” event, and from the looks of it, the eighth season appears promising.
Paste editions included a wide range of celebrities, from race car drivers to actors and singers, this season extended invitations to an eclectic mix of hopefuls including an Olympic gymnast, a controversial stunt performer, and a Grammy Award-winning rapper, among others.
Set to compete each other on the dance floor are singer Jewel and real-life hubby Ty Murray, while two-time champion of the show Julianne Hough will be pairing up with her beau, country crooner Chuck Wicks.
Newly engaged pro-dancers Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff will also take each other on in the dance competition. Previous married competitors included Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin.
“It's the most diverse cast we've had,” Deena Katz, “Dancing's” senior Talent Producer revealed to People magazine. “The women are phenomenal and the men are such great characters.”
Other celebrities announced include the youngest contestant ever on the show, Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, 17, TV host Nancy O'Dell, “Jackass” star Steve-O, Lil' Kim, Chuck Wicks, Belinda Carlisle, Denise Richards, David Alan Grier, Gilles Marini, computer guru Steve Wozniak.
In addition to the stars, two new professional dancers will hit the stage in the show's upcoming season, including “So You Think You Can Dance” alum Chelsea Hightower.
According to an ABC spokesperson, the remaining professional dancer/celebrity pairings will be announced on Thursday, February 12. Hosted by Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris, with Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba judging the contestants, DWTS’s new season premieres March 9 on ABC.
