On Friday felony
charges were filed against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. State officials
charged Kilpatrick with two felony counts of assaulting police officers during
an incident that occurred on July 24. The mayor was released on Friday after
spending the night in jail for perjury, misconduct and obstruction of
justice. But only hours later he was
faced with these two other felony charges.
Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty, who worked for him,
testified last year that they did not have a romantic relationship in spite of
controversial pager messages that proved exactly that. On Thursday, a state
district court judge ruled that the mayor should be jailed for violating the
conditions of his bond in the perjury case by going to Canada for a
business meeting without clearing the trip with the court.
Kilpatrick attorney
James Parkman III told The Detroit News early
Saturday the following: "I don't know what the circumstances were, but I
can't imagine that this is a problem," Parkman said. "The mayor was
approved for a business trip to upper New York State in mid-July, so this may be
related. I don't think this a matter where anyone is thinking he was getting
away with anything."
The latest accusations that have been filed against
Kilpatrick say that the Detroit Mayor shouted expletives at two officers who
were trying to serve a subpoena to one of his friends about two
weeks ago. He also grabbed one of the officers and pushed him into the other.
The next court date will be August 14 or 15. If convicted,
Kilpatrick would face up to two years in prison, and as a convicted felon would
no longer be able to serve as Detroit's
mayor.
