The wife of Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons decided to disregard her
estranged husband’s bid to keep their divorce trial private and revealed he had
an affair with another woman.
According to the Associated Press, Dawn Gibbons’ attorney,
Cal Dunlap, said that the law cited by the governor’s attorney in sealing the
divorce files violated both the U.S. Constitution and the Nevada Constitution.
Dunlap also revealed that Gov. Gibbons wanted to end his
marriage because of his "his infatuation and involvement" with
another woman than his wife. Apparently, that woman was Gibbons’ companion at
“bar, lunch, dinner and even grocery store.”
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Wednesday that the
governor said he was only been friends with the woman for 15 years, but
"there is nothing inappropriate about that friendship."
Gary Silverman, Gov. Gibbons’ attorney, said this was the
only public comment that the governor intended to make on the subject and he
would not make further comments regarding the subject, which he considered
“personal and private.”
In his divorce complaint filed May 2, Jim Gibbons listed incompatibility
as reason of the divorce that would end his marriage of 22 years.
Dawn Gibbons, 54, expressed her desire to continue her
duties as first lady and suggested that Jim Gibbons could move back into the
Governor’s Mansion in Carson City and she would live in a guest house on the
grounds, the Associated Press reports.
