Network Partnership Stands Up To Cancer

Famous networks CBS, ABC and NBC are combining to air a live, one-hour unique show and to donate commercial-free primetime for a nationally televised fundraiser in order to combat cancer.

Anchors Katie Couric, Charles Gibson and Brian Williams will join “Stand up to cancer,” which will air simultaneously on the three networks at 8 p.m. EDT on Friday. More than 60 A-list celebrities will participate at the event. Halle Berry, Miley Cyrus, Jessica Alba, Keanu Reeves, Fergie, Jennifer Aniston, Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Garner, Meryl Streep and Charlize Theron are just a few of the stars who will appear in the show, whose aim is to persuade scientists to collaborate harder in order to enhance cancer care, as well as prognoses, said Laura Ziskin, executive producer of “Stand up to cancer” and survivor of the disease.

The audience will be offered a kind of entertainment designed to educate, “a little bit entertaining - as well as educational and informative," CBS' Evening News anchor Couric said. Her husband Jay and her sister Emily passed away from cancer.

In the special show, ABC News' Gibson will report on breast cancer because this type of disease killed his parents and sister and, he added, “my wife has gone through a bout of it." (She is now recovering.)

And NBC News' Williams, who makes whole the anchor trio, said cancer claimed the lives of his mother and sister. The history of the disease in his family put him on the alert: “It's not a question of will I have cancer, but in what form and when."
