Neo Nazi March in Serbia, 30 Members Arrested

Approximately 30 member of a small neo Nazi organization were detained by police forces on Sunday as they were trying to hold a march in the Serbian town of Novi Sad. A month before, the World Jewish congress along with several Serbian parties demanded a ban of the Nazi march.

A greater part of those arrested were members of the neo-Nazi group "Nacionalni Stroj". Their leader, Goran "The Fuhrer" Davidovic, was detained as well, Interior Minister Dragan Jocic said for the Beta news agency.

Also arrested in Vojvodina’s main city, where 11 Slovak nationals, including nine neo-Nazis. There were also 8 Bulgarian neo-Nazis arrested in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

The disturbance began on Sunday as the neo-Nazi group threw stones and other objects at an anti-fascist march staged by liberal political parties and non-governmental organizations in Novi Sad.

The police forces deployed there were prompt to intervene before the violence could escalate.

"The police force reacted correctly, but what is worrying it is that there were provocations from the anti-fascist demonstrators." Minister Jocic said.

The "Nacionalni Stroj" - National Front – had scheduled its public meeting for Oct. 7, the birthday of Heinrich Himmler, the SS commander responsible for the death of hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies during the World War Two in what was then the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. There were hundreds killed by the Nazis in Novi Sad in 1942.

Police banned the march "because it endangered public morals and public safety".

Another far-right movement which calls itself Obraz (Face) planes to organize a rally to support the National Front.

Although the Neo Nazi groups are on the rise in Serbia, they have a small number of members and are generally marginalized.
