Sarah Palin has become “Saturday Night Live’s” icon and
that’s a fact. Although last night’s “Weekend Update Thursday” was extremely
hilarious and ran amok since it started the ball rolling and until its last
seconds, it may have somehow let down television viewers who expected to see
Tina Fey’s already famous performance as the Republican vice presidential
candidate.
Nevertheless, the show was beautifully split into a
10-minute sketch of the latest presidential debate between Barack Obama and
John McCain and a 20-minute report that contained yarns with regard to the
economical crisis, the much talked about O.J. Simpson trial and other subjects
besides the campaign.
The debate included an act by Fred Armisen, who, impersonating
Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, offered replies in an unflustered
and tedious manner, while Darrell Hammond, who filled the shoes of John McCain,
displayed sudden and out of place wide smiles and kept on blowing his own horn concerning
his maverick position in the Republican Party. Moreover, he repeatedly talked
about his competitor using humiliating expressions such as “this character
here,” “Junior over there” and “pee-pants over here,” which were obviously
inspired by the Republican presidential candidate’s use of “that one” when he
referred to his opponent during Tuesday’s nights debate.
The moderator was played by ex “Saturday Night Live” cast
member Chris Parnell, who came back so as to impersonate NBC anchor Tom Brokaw
and did not lose a single chance to say, “Your time is up!,” just like in the
heavily discussed real debate.
The show was definitely a blast, even in Tina Fey’s absence
(or Sarah Palin’s). However, we can’t seem to get enough of this character and
“SNL” might as well make the most of our weakness for John McCain’s running
mate.
