Neil Diamond, Person of the Year

According to the Associated Press, more than 2,000 people gathered at the 19th annual MusiCares Person of the Year celebration, held at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Friday night, in order to pay tribute to Neil Diamond. The 68-year-old artist was honored by the performances of many guest stars who sang covers of his own songs.

One of those stars was Jennifer Hudson who received a standing ovation from the entire audience of 1,500 people for her rendition of “Holly Holy.” After her Super Bowl performance, Jennifer seems to admirably be making her way back to the top after tragically having lost three of her close family members in a killing.

Coldplay sang “I’m a Believer,” and the Jonas Brothers, were the ones who began the evening’s show with “Forever in Blue Jeans.” Foo Fighters, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill joined them in launching the Grammy weekend with their performances.

The music industry charity celebrated Neil Diamond as MusiCares Person of the Year for his philanthropy, which included donating concert merchandise sales to relief efforts for Texas areas ravaged by Hurricane Ike as well as for helping struggling musicians by auctioning off some of his personal items for their benefit.

Diamond gathered around him his children and grandchildren as he listened to his “little creations” being interpreted for 2,200 people at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

He confessed for People magazine that he was elated to have the night dedicated to him. The artist also thanked his mother, Rose, who was in attendance, telling her and the crowd that the 10$ guitar she and his father bought him as a child turned out to be a good investment.
