The neglectful mother who abandoned
her six children with no money or food at their home in Houston in January and left
for Nigeria to marry a man she had met on the Internet one year before, was
arrested at the Bush Intercontinental
Airport at around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Harris County officials
announced.
The arrest was put together by
the sheriff’s office in collaboration with agents from the Immigration and
Customs Enforcement, and Shanell Monique Mosley was immediately taken to the
Harris County jail. The 33-year-old woman faces child endangerment and child
abandonment charges, and a $275,000 bail was set on her name.
The woman’s defense attorney
Emily DeToto said Mosley’s sister had promised she would come to Houston to
look after the children, but she never did. Moreover, the woman allegedly left
her children a full fridge and credit cards, but the reality the investigators
found at her home told a different story: the children aged 1 to 16 were found
living in filthy conditions, hungry and thirsty, and some of them were not even
aware of their birth dates.
Apparently Mosley was working as
a babysitter, but this time she proved she was incapable of taking care of her
own children, who have now been taken into foster homes. Her lawyer said the
woman loves her children and her only wish is to see them again, but the prosecutors
was not impressed by her tears, as they face a clear case of neglect.
Mosley allegedly told her
15-year-old daughter she would be back in 30-60 days, and she most certainly did
not expect authorities to knock on her door. But on December 31, after the
woman left for Nigeria, her teen daughter crashed the family car into the
garage, which forced authorities to start a thorough investigation that led to
the discovery of the neglected children.
It remains uncertain whether the
woman actually got married in Nigeria with her Internet acquaintance or not,
but that still doesn’t change the fact that she carelessly abandoned her six
children to take a one month trip across the ocean, leaving the little ones
with no means of existence. She is currently in jail, waiting for her trial.
