An HIV-positive chaplain was sentenced to two years in
prison on Thursday after he pleaded guilty that he had had sex with an Air Force
officer without telling him he had the virus and that he had forced himself on a Naval Academy
midshipman.
Lt. Cmdr. John Thomas Lee, 42, of Burke,
Va., was sentenced after he had reached an
agreement with prosecutors at a martial-court at Quantico Marine Corps Base,
south of Washington.
Lee, a former Catholic priest, pleaded guilty to forcible sodomy
with the midshipman, aggravated assault on the officer and other crimes.
Lee admitted in front of the court that he had acknowledged
about his disease in 2005. One year later, he had sex with an Air Force
lieutenant colonel, never telling him about his HIV status. Lee said he met the
man on the Internet and lied when directly asked about it.
The sodomy with the midshipman happened in the fall of 2004,
while the midshipman was in his junior year. The midshipman, whose name was not
released, testified that he allowed Lee to perform oral sex on him because
he was intimidated by his status as a chaplain.
"This was a priest. This was a guy who knew all of my
darkest secrets," the victim, now a Navy ensign, said on the witness
stand.
Cmdr. Lee was assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy from 2003 to
2006 and later to Quantico.
He was relieved of his duties in June.
According to Maj. Tim Keefe, a Marine spokesperson said that
nobody is known to have contracted HIV from Lee.
The chaplain presented his apologized “for all the harm” he
did, while being in the court, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Lee agreed, as part of his deal, to disclose to health
officials the names and other identifying information about his sexual partners
in the last four years.
In addition to sodomy, Lee was charged with conduct
unbecoming a military officer, aggravated assault and indecent assault and
fraternization.
