Oscar-winning British actress Helen Mirren admits to having
had a youth full of sex, drugs and… no, not rock’n’roll. Shoplifting.
The 63-year-old, who won an Oscar for her role in “The
Queen,” told GQ magazine she used to snort cocaine when she was younger, but
stopped taking the drug when she found out that a Nazi war criminal profited
from the drug business.
“I loved coke. I never did a lot, just a little bit at
parties,” she said, quoted by the magazine. “But what ended it for me was when
they caught Klaus
Barbie, the Butcher of Lyon, in the early ‘80s. . . . I read
that in the paper, and all the cards fell into place and I saw how my little
sniff of cocaine at a party had an absolute direct route to this [expletive]
horrible man in South America. And from that
day I never touched cocaine again.”
If you’re thinking, “That’s quite a confession,” wait till
you hear this: Helen Mirren reportedly said she used to steal during her “very
poor” youth. “I needed to shoplift for food,” she explained, adding that while
she enjoyed the advantages of showbiz, she still had penny-pinching impulses,
cutting her own hair and wearing a-dollar-each glasses.
In addition to this, Helen Mirren sparked controversy by
telling the same magazine that not all date rape victims have success in
bringing their case before a court.
She said that if, for instance, a woman is engaged in sexual
activity, but refuses to continue at the last minute, she’ll find it hard to
bring the perpetrator to court.
The actress also admitted to having been date-raped “a
couple of times.”
Ruth Hall, of the campaign group Women against Rape, said
Mirren’s comments worsened the situations of women who already had a hard time
in getting the criminal justice system to take their cases into account.
