A nationwide search is on for 20-year-old Marine Lance
Corporal Maria Lauterbach, missing from Camp
Lejeune in North Carolina since December 14, who is
eight months pregnant and could give birth at any time.
Lauterbach, of Dayton,
Ohio, was expected to testify
about an incident she witnessed on base, according to her mother’s report to
the police. She said she had begun to worry when her daughter stopped calling
as she used to.
According to investigators and family members, Lauterbach disappeared
on December 14 from the Camp Lejeune Base. Her mother reported her missing on
December 19. Police investigators say that December 14 was the last day when
the victim’s cell phone was used. The device was discovered on December 20 at
the front gate of Camp
Lejeune.
On the same December 14, a withdrawal from Lauterbach’s bank
account was made the Marine Corp Times said. Moreover, ten days after her
disappearance there was suspicious activity on her bank account, the
authorities reported.
Lauterbach’s car, a Hyundai Sonata, was found Monday
abandoned at a Jacksonville
bus station, according to local media sources.
“There are several findings and pieces of evidence that have
been discovered that cause law enforcement to be concerned with the
circumstances surrounding Maria’s disappearance,” the sheriff’s department said
according to the Associated Press.
Lauterbach’s friends have created a page on Facebook, called
Help Us Find Maria, where people posted different comments and pictures, and
which could be accessed by anyone who knows something about her.
"Call mom!!! You know the number," the page says. "All of us
love you and we miss you. Please come home!" says a message on the page.
Lauterbach joined the Marine Corps on June 6, 2006 and was
trained as a Personnel Clerk.
Sheriff Ed Brown offers a personal reward of $500 to anyone
who tracks the girl.
