A New York woman found a snake in her baby girl’s crib during the night, Newsday reported Tuesday.
The mother, Cari Abatemarco, was probably woken up by the child’s cry and most likely thought it was just one of those nights, but she was stunned to find out a snake in the 7-month-old's crib.
Abatemarco of Troy, N.Y., was visiting her family in Long Island, in Brentwood. The mother said she woke up and lifted her daughter Isabella from her crib and that is when the snake fell off her. Her uncle then intervened and lifted the snake with a back-scratcher. He placed the animal in a bucket until the animal control officers arrived at the scene.
Abatemarco said that once she lifted Isabella and the snake fell off her, the baby girl stopped crying.
"But then I was the one crying all night," she added.
According to the animal control officers, the snake was a 1-foot-long California king. This kind of snakes is non-venomous, but constrictor. California king snakes are commonly kept as pets, but not indigenous to the region.
It is still unknown where the reptile came from, but the mother told Newsday she believed the reptile was in the recently-bought mattress.
