NY authorities ordered the suspending of all crane operations throughout the city this weekend in order to properly investigate the latest crane collapse in which two construction workers were killed on Friday.
The crane collapse also injured a third worker as it fell into an apartment building. The accident continues a long series of crane collapses in NY. The previous similar incident killed seven people on March 15 also in Manhattan - on East 51st Street.
Since then officials stepped-up inspections and the buildings commissioner resigned.
The one who suspended all the crane operations in NYC during this weekend was the current Commissioner Robert LiMandri, The Los Angeles Times reported.
The latest collapse occurred on Friday at about 8 a.m. Until the crash, workers had erected 13 floors of a residential building that was designed to have 32 stories.
The crane collapsed from about 200 feet above street level into “The Electra” apartment building on East 91st Street. The building was damaged and the street below was filled with debris. The crane’s cab, boom and machine deck collapsed into an apartment building.
The crane operator, 30-year-old Donald Leo, died at the moment of the impact. He was dead by the time rescue crews removed him from the cabin.
Another construction worker, Ramadan Kurtaj, 27, died as a part of the crane fell on him with such a force that it penetrated the street several feet.
