The political future of Rep. Vito Fossella of New York is very insecure, after he admitted on Thursday that he had fathered a child from an extramarital affair.

The issue of a possible love child was made public when Fossella was arrested on drunken driving charges last week in the Virginia suburbs of Washington. Police reported the alcohol level in his blood was twice the legal limit and Fossella could spend five days in jail if convicted.

When Fossella was pulled over, he told police officers that he was going to visit his daughter who lived in the area. That made everyone wonder who the daughter was.

"I have had a relationship with Laura Fay, with whom I have a 3-year-old daughter," Fossella said in his statement.

The congressman also asked his loved ones for forgiveness, saying that his "imperfections" caused them to suffer.

"My personal failings and imperfections have caused enormous pain to the people I love and I am truly sorry," said Fossella, as quoted by USA Today.

Fossella won his House seat in 1997, after Rep. Susan Molinari resigned. He is a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Fossella is now aware that his disclosure about his private life will trouble his political future, especially as the Democrats are planning to unseat him this year.

"While I understand that there will be many questions, including those about my political future, making any political decisions right now are furthest from my mind. Over the coming weeks and months, I will continue to do my job and I will work hard to heal the deep wounds I have caused," he said, according to USA Today.
