The Thanksgiving Holiday has been embraced with a rumor of a possible Al Qaeda attack on New York’s subway system. U.S. officials have warned of a possible attack on the transit systems in and around New York City and the NYPD have responded to the threat by increasing the number of police officers in subway stations. It is very important the whole thing to be held quiet and under control as panic is not the best way to spend the holidays. There have been other similar rumors that never took place and this might just be another false alarm.
Currently New York is on orange alert, while the rest of the state is one level bellow at yellow. A spokesman for the Homeland Security Department reported that the threat was issue on the basis of plausible but uncorroborated information and it is wise that security is being increased and that measures are taken.
It is well know that around Thanksgiving the NY subway is very crowded as many people need to be places, most probably with their loved ones and families. On the other hand, this is not the first time NY is faced with blind terrorist threats and it is very important that people should be aware, but not scared or panicked.
In 2005 the subway in New York was on high alert as it was believed that a bomb attack was possible. It turned out that it was just a blind rumor meant to scare people. A similar situation happened in August 2007 when it was believed that Al Qaeda was planning a bomb attack in th city. This rumor also lacked credibility.
