NYC Civil Rights Lawyer’s Daughter Accused Of Forgery

Like mother, like daughter! Brenna Stewart, 46, daughter of civil rights lawyer Lynne Stewart, convicted in 2006 to 28 months in prison for illegally helping her client, Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, to communicate with his Jihad followers, was arrested yesterday and faces felony and falsifying business records charges and nine counts of misdemeanor theft, authorities reported.

Brenna Stewart, who works as a gym teacher at the Bronx Leadership Academy II, is accused of submitting fake doctor’s notes on several occasions, to excuse her absence from work. The notes were apparently given by her sister, Zenobia Brown, who is a Physician in Florida, and from a fictitious Dr. Richard Zengotita, from the New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Special Commissioner of Investigation Richard Condon concluded in a report last year that Stewart also faked her aunt’s death certificate three years after the woman’s death to take a bereavement day: “Whenever teachers are not there, the kids end up with substitutes. It’s stealing money,” Condon said regarding Stewart’s case.

The charges were announced following a press release by Condon’s office. Brenna Stewart turned herself to the authorities on Monday, accompanied by her lawyer, Daniel Arshack, expecting to be released later that night without a bail. She faces up to seven years in prison if she is to be found guilty of charges.

It is not the first time Condon finds irregularities with some excuses several teachers have used to skip work, and Stewart made no exception. The investigation began when the Bronx Leadership Academy II’s principal alerted Condon that something was suspicious about the teacher’s notes.

The Stewart mother-daughter couple is now facing prison and awaits a final sentence. While Brenna faces seven years in prison, her mother, Lynne, has not begun serving her term and filed an appeal. Neither one wished to comment on the new situation.
