A former minor league baseball player accused of beating, stomping and kicking his girlfriend's cat to death during a drunken fury in March 2007 had been brought into court. Juror Doug Collman told reporters that the vote had been 11 to 1 in favor of conviction on aggravated animal cruelty, a felony carrying a prison term of up to two years. The trial took place at the New York State Supreme Court.
Joseph Petcka’s verdict hasn’t been given yet despite four days of intense debate. The deliberations drag into a fifth day Friday, two days longer than the trial. Therefore the judge ended the trial by declaring a hung jury.
Joseph Petcka who weighs about 205 pounds, claimed that 7 pound cat Norman attacked him so he defended himself, but the prosecution contended that Petcka was jealous of the cat. They said Joseph Petcka complained that Lisa Altobelli, his girlfriend, loved the cat more than she loved him.
The prosecutors admitted that Petcka overreacted when he was bitten, but did not intentionally kill the declawed feline.
In case you were wondering where you know him from, Petcka pitched in the New York Mets' minor league system in 1992. He later acted in a paper-towel commercial and had small roles in "Sex and the City" and other television shows.
The judge ordered Petcka to return to court on October 23. A spokeswoman for the District Attorney said prosecutors were considering a retrial.
