NBC Makes the Most of Its Super Bowl Attention

The network which broadcasts the Super Bowl game is often the one which also advertises it. NBC will air the game on Sunday for the first time in 11 years. The Super Bowl is the most watched event so the NBC’s executives put all their hopes in the five minutes of the free promotional time.

A 30-second adds worth $3 million so the entire $30 million value will probably help the new viewers to watch the prime-time lineup on NBC. Yet, the network is heaping on the Super Bowl for more than a five minute commercial time. This Saturday in Orlando, where the Super Bowl XLIII is being held on Sunday, NBC invited many advertisers to make a preview of the programming from next year.

Last year, the series of meetings with the advertisers started in April and the Super Bowl this year is just an extension of it. Previewing the pilot episodes up to 9 months before they are actually broadcast takes a great number of advertisers to get involved in the creative process. NBC will call this weekend the “SuperFront.”

For this television season NBC has already signed an important number of advertising deals. For example, the “Knight Rider,” in which Ford Motor featured its Mustang, had a full season in spite of the low ratings. After that, General Motors provided the show with two new vehicles in “My Own Worst Enemy,” but this got canceled too last fall. Thus, it all took to “The Biggest Loser,” the reality show to which General Mills tied all their products.

Ben Silverman, the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, stated that advertisers appreciated that the network started the conversation earlier than supposed. The advertisers will start watching “Kings,” “Southland,” “Chopping Block” and many other preview episodes starting February.
