NASCAR to Kick Off Daytona 500

Tony Stewart finished in front of teammate Kyle Busch with a late-race pass on Saturday. Stewart won the Camping World 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the Daytona International Speedway, driving the #20 Home Depot Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing.

"I'll let you guys each take a shot at the scissors tomorrow if we can win this thing," said Stewart after winning. "Each of you can cut a lock for yourself. That's my gift."

There were some complants about blocking. Martin Truex Jr. whined that Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 Toyota, kept blocking him, but he rejected the accusations: "What do you want me to do, pull over? Grow up, dude," Busch said.

Rumors circulated that Stewart punched Kurt Busch recently in a closed-door meeting with Nascar officials. The incident was alleged to have happened after the two bumped and battered each other’s racecars during a practice session at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 8. They were both put on probation.

"I think it was just sheer coincidence that it happened on the heels of us saying we’re going back to basics," NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said Thursday while race teams qualified and continued preparing for the season-opening Daytona 500 today.

Indeed, NASCAR is losing fans, fast. Officials are struggling to maintain interest in the sport and win back old-timers who feel that the comercialization of NASCAR has ruined it.
