NASA celebrated the 40th anniversary of the success of the Apollo 8 mission. Apollo 8 is largely responsible for opening the doors to the moon landing and into further space exploration. The Apollo 8 was the first shuttle escaping the gravitational field of our planet to circle the moon and come back to Earth safely.
The achievement is immense and it is a shining example of perfect balance between technology and human skill even by today’s standards. The astronauts piloting the Apollo 8 were Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders, who on that December 21sth became the first humans to circle the moon.
NASA celebrated this day by broadcasting from the International Space Station through NASA television a special message from three residents living on our planet’s orbit. The message first aired on Friday and will air again on Tuesday. This is a short reminder that man is still dreaming to know the secrets of the Universe and is still preoccupied with knowing how it all came to be.
Thinking right now, that we’re sent people to the moon and on the moon and back, that we have eyes in the darkest corners of the solar system, that some of us live on our planet’s orbit and we’re now dreaming to go to Mars, gives a special feeling of accomplishment.
It gives the impression that we mean something as a people, as a community of an entire planet, not as countries or nations.
