After Cyclone Nargis wrecked a vast region of Myanmar nearly two weeks ago, the unfortunate south Asian country may be hit by yet another tropical storm.
The Pearl Harbor-based U.S. Defense Department's Joint Typhoon Warning Center said Wednesday said that another cyclone is forming and could hit the Burmese Irrawaddy delta region again. There are pretty good chances that the tropical storm which is currently forming over the Burmese capital will hit Myanmar’s delta region in the next 24 hours.
If efforts made by the UN humanitarian relief program to provide aide to the people of Myanmar were hampered so far by the country’s leaders, another cyclone hitting the area would make it even tougher. There are approximately two million Burmese without food and water that need help.
A United Nations spokeswoman underlined the fact that the forecast does not guarantee that a second cyclone will strike Myanmar, but she described the possibility as a “terrible” threat.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej will visit Burma today (Wednesday) to deliver the appeals of the international community for the military junta who rules over Myanmar. He plans to convince them to accept more international assistance.
The Thai PM has recently accepted the request coming from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the United States to act as a mediator between them and the Myanmar rulers.
The numerous aid workers who are currently waiting in Bangkok to receive entry passes from the Burmese authorities said that the efforts to help the people of the ravaged Irrawaddy Delta will most likely “collapse” if a similar tempest strikes.
The death toll of the disaster caused by Cyclone Nargis has now passed the 34,000 mark. The world body estimates the death toll could be as high as 100,000.
