MySpace and Sprint Nextel Corp made public their plans to join forces in order to launch a unique service in the first quarter of 2008. The official announcement was made in Hollywood, Fla., on Thursday.
"With prominent placement on the Sprint mobile Web home page, customers will have immediate and easy-to-find access to our network of sites on Sprint phones." Fox Interactive Media President Peter Levinsohn, who made the announcement, said.
When the plan will be put into practice, Sprint will become the first U.S. wireless carrier linked to the free MySpace mobile Website. The project will most likely be a successful one as Fox Interactive Media, the developer of MySpace, has had several collaborations with Sprint since 2002.
After the project is implemented, the Sprint customers with enabled phones will have direct access to MySpace, without additional charge.
MySpace Mobile will add graphic design, a brand new e-mail interface and other new features.
The statement also added that the cell phone users will be able to connect to News Corp's service by clicking a link, instead of typing the entire address. Other links included in the agreement will make it a lot easier for cell phone users to connect to News Corp's other Internet properties, including FOXSports.com, IGN, RottenTomatoes, AskMen and Photobucket.
News Corp. shares fell 7 cents to $21.58, and Sprint Nextel shares fell 7 cents to $14.59.
