Music and Game Integrated in MTV’s ‘Rock Band’

MTV stood to its promise made last year when it bought Harmonix Music Systems for $175 million, coming on the gaming market, through Electronic Arts, with “Rock Band’ developed for Playstation 2, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

The MTV officials present ‘Rock Band’ as a product beyond only a game. ‘Rock Band’s’ integrate music and game at a new level, being a platform with two guitars, a drum kit and a microphone which permits people to engage with music forgetting that they are just four people sitting on a living room’s couch.

‘Rock Band’ is a party game that through its inclusion of multiple instruments, it is the most advanced in the music-gaming category. Recently, Activision released ‘Guitar Hero III’ which sold over $100 million in its first week on the market. Although the ‘Rock Band’s’ guitar controller doesn’t work as smooth as the one of the Activision’s ‘Guitar Hero’, Viacom, MTV’s owner, stated through its spokesperson, that "'Rock Band' is a much bigger game with a completely different social dynamic and full network capability -- it just takes it to another level." This initiative might have broken down the barriers between music and gaming.

Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos said that "with 'Rock Band,' we have almost 90 percent original masters in the game and a lot of artist participation." He added that "a lot of artists are now seeing 'Rock Band' as a legitimate venue for people to experience their music."

‘Rock Band’ price vary from $49 to $59 for the disc only to $169 for the PlayStation and Xbox 360 versions, with all the music peripherals. Its makers will provide also music downloads and other new content every week, this being another argument for its higher prices.
