Mumbai Slum Residents Protest against “Slumdog Millionaire’s” Title

Thursday, several dozen Mumbai slum residents organized a protest against Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire,” claiming that the movie’s title was insulting to them.

Coming from the same director who has given some memorable movies so far, such as “Trainspotting,” “The Beach” and “28 Days Later,” „Slumdog Millionaire” follows the same unconventional and perpetually astonishing line its predecessors have.

Shot at the heart of India in Mumbai, the film tells the story of 18-year-old orphan Jamal Malik, portrayed by British actor Dev Patel, who gets to be a contestant on the Indian version of the „Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” game show. And when he pins all the answers and reaches the final stage of the contest, the boy living in the slums of Mumbai is brought in for an interrogatory at the police station, accused of having cheated on the show, since nobody can wrap their mind around how a low-life like him could have known all that.

The production, which was awarded four Golden Globes, including one for best drama, features many local actors, but it seems that not all Mumbai residents have resolved to take pride in that aspect, despite the prizes the movie has won so far and the fact that everybody sees “Slumdog Millionaire” as a very likely Oscar winner.

Nicholas Almeida, a social activist who organized the protest during which people displayed banners reading "Poverty For Sale" and "I am not a dog," revealed he was also planning to file a lawsuit on Friday in an attempt to get the name of movie changed.
