George Takei who played Mr. Sulu in "Star Trek" got married in Los Angeles on Sunday. George Takei and his longtime partner and business manager, Brad Altman tied the knot in a Buddhist ceremony. The 71-year-old Takei and the 54-year-old Altman had been dating for 21 years. Takei was led to the reception by a Scottish bagpiper.
Nearly 200 people attended the ceremony at the Japanese American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles. A part of the “Star Trek” cast was present as well. They included best man Walter Koenig, who played Chekhov, and best lady of honor Nichelle Nichols who played Uhura. Their guests were taken to dine on Asian/Baja Californian fusion cuisine and all of them left home with Japanese tea ceremony treats in boxes printed with the phrase: "May sweet equality live long and prosper," according to the Associated Press.
The couple wore matching white tuxedos with black pants for the ceremony. They stepped into a circle of yellow roses and lilies as they arrived.
The couple wrote their own vows. "I vow to care for you as you've cared for me ... and to love you as my husband and the only man in my life," Takei said as he held Altman's hands.
The two are among the first couples to receive a marriage license in West Hollywood when the state began granting licenses to gay couples on June 17.
The "Star Trek" star and his better half plan to spend their honeymoon in Argentina and Peru.
