Movie-Starring Grizzly Bear Kills Trainer

A grizzly bear that recently appeared in the movie “Semi-Pro,” starring Will Ferrell, fatally bit the neck of one of its trainers Tuesday, near Big Bear Lake, and had to be tempered with pepper spray.

Three experienced trainers were working with the bear at Randy Miller’s Predators in Action facility when, for unknown reasons, the bear rapidly attacked 39-year-old Stephan Miller, biting him on the neck before anyone could react.

After the center’s staff used pepper spray on the bear, the 700-pound animal calmed down and caused no more injuries.

A Fire Department traumatic injury response unit of the San Bernardino County arrived at the scene about 3 p.m., but could not revive Miller, who was identified as Randy Miller’s cousin by the sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Beavers.

The 5-year-old bear named Rocky appeared in a wrestling scene in “Semi-Pro,” through which Will Ferrell’s character wanted to promote his basketball team.

In a February interview with the San Bernardino Sun, Randy Miller, who doubled Ferrell in the bear wrestling scene, said Rocky was "the best working bear in the business."

He also added that the animals were still extremely dangerous, even though they were trained well.

"They are world famous for wrestling scenes they have done in films and live shows. These bears are hard working and known for long runs, great action and staged attacks. They are good around people but can look extremely dangerous,” the Predators in Action website reads, promoting the center’s well-trained animals.

Predators in Action also trains cougars, lions and tigers, claiming that the animals trained at the center can be either nice and gentle or leave the impression they are out of control.

Randy Miller won a World Stunt Academy Award for wrestling tigers in the film “Gladiator” in 2000, and performed stunts with his animals in famous movies such as “The Last Samurai” or “The Island of Dr. Moreau.”

The Fish and Game Department is currently deciding the bear’s fate. They declared they knew of no safety violations at Predators in Action.
