As far-fetched as it may seem, some people pay their rents
with money earned from adult movie production. While Kevin Smith’s new film is
far from portraying X-rated scenes, it does deal with two characters who decide
to become rich by making a porno.
But there is more to “Zack and Miri” than this. The movie
depicts love through the creative eyes of its director, whose fans are few, but
loyal.
And this less conservative way of describing feelings avoids
to put romantic relationships on a pedestal, leaving room for humor and
originality, a couple of features that many films lack.
Kevin Smith wrote Zack’s persona keeping in mind Seth Rogen,
whose roles in “Knocked Up” and “Pineapple Express” prove the actor’s outstanding
comedic skills. Therefore, the Seth Rogen-like magic in the character is more
than obvious and this may offer the movie an incredible boost to mainstream,
especially since Elizabeth Banks brings some sparkle to the scenes between her
Miri and Rogen’s Zack.
The two main characters are old pals and roommates, who find
themselves in the midst of a not-so-global economic crisis. In spite of the
fact that they share the rent and are both employed, they don’t seem to cope
with the expenses.
Thus, after a high school reunion where they find out that a
former colleague has become a prosperous gay-porn filmmaker, Zack and Miri
decide to give homemade porn a shot. On their way to a more or less successful
position in adult-movie industry, the two discover there is more between them
than mere friendship.
If you believed romance was the only one to lead to love,
find out that for Zack and Miri it’s the other way around.
