Here we go again. Another comedy based on stereotypes and
tacky jokes.
I like Adam Sandler, I really do, but I wish, just for once,
he wouldn’t take the easy way out.
It seems like all the characters he plays don’t ask for much
skill. I know that, by his nature, Sandler is a comedian and he fits perfectly
in comedies, but he should take the high road and try something different.
Not all comedies must have an obvious sense of humor, not
all comedies must be simple. Complexity can be funny too. Fine humor can also
attract people. And I’m sure that Sandler is capable of that. But he’s too
lazy.
The movie “You Don't Mess With the Zohan,” directed by
Dennis Dugan and written by Adam Sandler, Robert Smigel, and Judd Apatow is a
superfluous comedy in which Sandler plays the part of Zohan, a top Israeli
commando who decides to flee his country because he wants to become a
hairstylist in, you guessed it, the land of all possibilities, America. After
faking his death, Zohan arrives in America
and finds a job as a sweeper in a hair salon in Brooklyn.
He changes his name to Scrappy Coco and, after proving his skills in the
business, he becomes a real star, attracting many clients, I mean women.
What puzzles me is the fact that, being the land of all
possibilities, America,
as presented in comedies, shelters the same actions: a foreigner comes here in
pursuit of his dream, he starts form the bottom, makes no compromises regarding
his principles, manages to make people love him and saves the day. He does all
and still manages to be funny.
Give people the possibility to be free and they will imitate
one another.
So, following the above mentioned scenario, Zohan aka
Scrappy Coco aka Mister Funny, Relaxed at All Times, Sex Machine aka Very Skillful Hairstylist falls in love with his Palestinian boss, Dalia (Emmanuelle
Chriqui) and finds himself in the position to revive his old commando habits
because a bunch of local Arabs recognize him and decide to take him out.
The movie is filled with physical humor and sex jokes, while
the racial stereotyping remains present.
Although some of the jokes can be quite funny, they're not. The numerous references to pubic hair and hummus ruin the fun.
Even the cast, featuring some of Adam Sandler’s regulars
like Henry Winkler, John McEnroe, Rob Schneider, Kevin Nealon and John
Turturro, which usually manages to pull off quite a lot of laughs seems a bit
dull in this picture, not being able to really bring it on screen. Nice try.
Even though Sandler’s fans might expect the quality humor to
minimize the effects of the vulgar punch lines and situations,
unfortunately, it might seem to be the other way around.
All in all, if you really get bored and have nothing else to
do, you should watch the movie. You will not regret watching it, but you won’t
love it either. It’s mediocre.
