Movie Review: Bride Wars

“Bride Wars” is designed to be a comedy, but with a too-spoken-about subject. Liv, interpreted by Kate Hudson, and Emma, played by Anne Hathaway, are best friends since childhood and have both had the same obsession, to plan every detail or their weddings.

Fox’s comedy is to be released on Friday and is directed by Gary Winick, written by Greg DePaul and June Raphael together with Casey Wilson from “Saturday Night Live.” The movie stars Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Annabel Grealish, Candice Bergen and Chris Pratt.

Since Liv and Kate were little girls who could only dream about their perfect wedding, they decided to make a “must have” list for their respective ceremonies. But plans go a little out of control when they both wish to have their ceremonies at the Plaza Hotel from New York. Planning to marry their respective husbands to-be, everything seems to be going perfectly. The dates are set, their dresses are beautiful, and the maids of honor are as joyful as can be. But the weddings turn out to take place on the same day, June 6.

Yet, now they’re both 26 and are two grown-up women who…always fight for what they want. Liv is a lawyer and is accustomed to getting everything she desires, from a perfect husband and job to a perfect wedding.

Emma, on the other side, is a schoolteacher, who got accustomed to help the others and leave her beside everything. But now, she also wants her wedding to be perfect and she is ready to do anything as to have it this way.

So the two start the “Bride Wars,” in spite of their tradition to do anything for each other, as to have everything they had desired since they were little girls.

The script for the movie was completed by Raphael and Wilson, from the original script by Greg DePaul, before the Writers Guild of America strike began. Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith also contributed to the screenplay.

“Bride Wars” was mainly filmed in Boston, Massachusetts, New York City and Salem.

Kate Hudson came to the spotlights in 2001 after she had received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for her role in “Almost Famous.” Since then, Hudson started starring in several films and reached to be one of Hollywood’s lead actresses.

Her roles include movies like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “You, Me and Dupree” and “Fool’s Gold.”

Anne Hathaway made her acting debut in the television series “Get Real” in 1999. Yet, her most important role was in Disney’s comedy, “The Princess Diaries,” where she played together with Julie Andrews. During the next years, she went on starring in family films, which included “Ella Enchanted,” and “Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.”
