Oscar-winning U.S. actor Morgan Freeman was hospitalized in
serious condition on Monday after the car he was driving left a road in the
Mississippi Delta and rolled several times, as reported by the Associated
Press.
The actor “has a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder
damage,” according to a statement released on Monday afternoon by Donna Lee,
Morgan Freeman’s publicist.
A spokeswoman at Regional
Medical Center
in Memphis said
the actor was in serious condition but would not give further details.
However, Donna Lee added that he would undergo surgery later
on Monday or the next day, but was “in good spirits.” “He is having a little
bit of surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to help correct the damage,” Lee’s
statement read. “He says he’ll be OK and is looking forward to a full
recovery.”
Morgan Freeman, 71, lost control of the vehicle late on
Sunday near his residence in Charleston,
Mississippi. He was airlifted to
a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital, approximately 100 miles
away.
According to Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben
Williams, cited by the Associated Press, the actor was driving a 1997 Nissan
Maxima, owned by Demaris Meyer of Memphis,
the passenger in the vehicle at the time of the single-car accident.
Sgt. Ben Williams reported that neither Freeman nor his
companion had been under alcohol or drug influence and that they both were
wearing seat belts. Nevertheless, no information was given on the woman’s
health condition.
Morgan Freeman won an Oscar in 2005 for his supporting role
in Clint Eastwood’s production “Million Dollar Baby.” In addition to this, he
earned other Oscar nominations for his work in movies such as “Street Smart,”
“Driving Miss Daisy” and “The Shawshank Redemption.” He is also one of the
stars in “The Dark Knight” blockbuster.
