More Morgan Freeman news: The actor, who fractured his arm
and elbow Sunday in a car crash and is now recovering in hospital after
undergoing surgery, is reportedly divorcing his wife of 24 years.
Morgan Freeman’s Mississippi-based attorney and business
partner has confirmed to Access Hollywood that the septuagenarian actor is
divorcing his wife of almost a quarter of a century.
Freeman and costumer Myrna Colley-Lee “are involved in a
divorce action,” Bill Luckett, who is also a friend of the actor’s, told Access
Hollywood.
“And for legal and
practical purposes, [Freeman and Colley-Lee] have been separated since December
of 2007,” Luckett, who is also a friend of the actor’s, said.
Morgan Freeman was involved in an accident Sunday on Mississippi
Highway 32 and the car he was driving belonged to Demaris Meyer, who was also
in the car with him. This sparked some interest, as some wondered what his
association with the 48-year-old woman was.
Morgan Freeman was driving Meyer’s 1997 Nissan Maxima in a
rural area of Tallahatchie
County when he lost
control of the vehicle and overcorrected. This caused the car to flip over
several times before finally resting right-side up.
The accident occurred around 11.30 p.m. The two were
reportedly on their way to Morgan Freeman’s home. He and Myrna reportedly have
a house in Charleston,
about 4 miles from the accident scene.
The car was badly mangled and the rescue team needed to use
the jaws of life to extract the actor and Meyer.
Both were conscious and coherent and Freeman even joked,
telling standers-by who were pulling out their phone cameras, “No freebies, no
freebies.”
The actor was seriously injured though and was airlifted to the
Regional Medical
Center in Memphis, some 90 miles north of the scene of
the accident.
Clay McFerrin, editor of the Sun Sentinel in Charleston, was on the
scene of the accident and told the Associated Press Freeman was “lucid,
conscious,” and even “talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one
point.”
Meyer was also airlifted to the Regional Medical
Center.
The 71-year-old Academy Award winner underwent surgery
Monday night “to reconnect nerves and repair damage in his left arm and hand,”
his spokesperson Donna Lee said in a statement Tuesday.
He had broken his arm and elbow and had a “minor shoulder
damage” due to the accident, Lee had previously said. The surgery, which lasted
four and a half hours, was successful though and Tuesday morning he was “doing
well” and already receiving visits from his family, she added.
“As of this morning
he’s up and walking around and looking forward to his release in a few days,”
she concluded. He is expected to have a full recovery.
Mississippi Highway Patrol told Access Hollywood that no
alcohol was involved. The investigation continues but no charges have been
filed against Freeman.
Morgan Freeman currently co-stars in the box office
record-breaker “The Dark Knight.” He won an Academy Award for best supporting
actor for his role in 2004’s Clint Eastwood-directed “Million Dollar Baby.”
His recent screen credits include Ben Affleck’s directorial
debut, “Gone, Baby, Gone,” “The Bucket List,” starring opposite Jack Nicholson
and this summer’s action thriller “Wanted,” starring Angelina Jolie and James
McAvoy.
