A report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the number of teens who have a risky behavior has dropped drastically since 1991. The most important risk factors that have been taken into account by the survey include substance abuse, alcohol drinking as well as sexual activity.
The downside discovered by the survey is the fact that Hispanic teenagers have shown little improvement compared with blacks and whites. While the percentage of teenagers who have sexual intercourse has dropped from 82 percent to 66 percent for blacks and from 50 percent to 44 percent for whites, the percentage of Hispanic teens who had sex by 2008 dropped to 52 percent, from 53 percent in 1991. The same gap can be seen in statistics related to teenagers who have had sex with more than four partners.
Hispanics are also the most exposed teenagers to drug abuse, being the category with the largest percent of individuals to ever be offered or sell narcotics. Drinking is also a week point for young Hispanics who are most likely to accept a ride from someone who has been drinking, or to drink alcohol themselves on school property.
The survey hasn’t given any explanation on why these things happen, but a reason could be the fact that Hispanics are harder to be taught about the risks involved by such behavior, because of the language differences between them and blacks or whites.
The conclusions of the survey were drawn after analyzing data from about 14,000 students from schools located in the USA’s 50 states and the District of Columbia.
