More food products containing peanut butter are being recalled from the shelves as the U.S. government is continuing its investigation into the current outbreak of salmonella food poisoning which most likely caused six deaths and numerous illnesses throughout the United States.
General Mills Inc joined the list of companies involved in the salmonella-related recall. The company voluntarily recalled two varieties of peanut butter-flavored snack bars because the peanut butter contained by the snacks was produced by Peanut Corp of America (PCA), the company at the root of the salmonella outbreak.
Other companies such as Illinois-based Ralcorp Frozen Bakery Products, Tennessee-based McKee Foods Corp and Michigan-based grocer and retailer Meijer recalled some of their product which contained peanut butter for the same reason. If you already bought a "Little Debbie" peanut butter sandwich cracker, a Meijer Brand sandwich cracker or a Meijer Brand ice cream don’t eat it!
Government investigators said they already found traces of salmonella contamination at a Peanut Corp of America processing plant located in Blakely, Georgia.
Authorities urged the population not to eat products which contain peanut butter or peanut butter served in institutional settings. FDA investigators are still identifying the products that should be recalled.
Although no illnesses were reported yet in connection with its products, General Mills said it recalled Larabar Peanut Butter Cookie flavor snack bars and JamFrakas Peanut Butter Blisscrisp flavor snack bars. Meanwhile, Kellogg Co said the investigators found traces of salmonella in one package of Austin Quality Foods Toasty Crackers with Peanut Butter.
So far, as much as 453 people in 43 states as well as Canada have been infected with Salmonella Typhimurium. About 22% of those were hospitalized and six died.
