At Thursday's "Sex and the City: The Movie" DVD launch party at the New York Public Library, guests were only able to catch a glimpse of Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall as they hardly spent any time with their enthusiastic fans. The stars retired to a remote section of the Library's upper level instead.
However the "Sex and the City" author, Candace Bushnell managed to squeeze out some information about her writing two young adult novels about Carrie Bradshaw's teen years. She signed a contract with HarperCollins. "I haven't even started working on them yet," Bushnell admitted. "But I love the character, and I am excited to look back at those years and explore what events form her as she becomes a young woman."
According to an announcement made by HarperCollins on Wednesday, “The Carrie Diaries," supposedly "takes readers back to Carrie Bradshaw's formative years in high school, giving an inside look at Carrie's friendships, romances and how she realized her dream of becoming a writer." The first book will come out in 2010.
HarperCollins publisher Donna Bray told the Observer this week that the books would be set partly in New York City and partly in the apparently but yet undetermined suburb in which the teenage Bradshaw resided. The idea of following around a young fashion-icon-in-training seems to draw obvious comparisons to "Gossip Girl," but Parker thinks Carrie wouldn't bear much resemblance to Serena van der Woodsen.
In the meantime, Bushnell focuses on her fifth book, “One Fifth Avenue,” which is due out next week. This is a grownup story that takes place at one of the most notorious locations in Manhattan.
