More Men Undergoing Plastic Surgery, Report Shows

Beauty appears to have become an issue for men as well not only for women if considering the latest report of the American Society of Plastic Surgery.

Between 2002 and 2007, the percent of males undergoing cosmetic surgery registered a significant jump. Sixteen percent more men choose to have an eyelid tuck or a full face-lift. They are taking care of their jaws, as well as of their waists.

Overall, men underwent 1.1 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in 2007.

What is surprising is the fact that not only baby boomers choose to change their look, but also the much younger males who often opt for love handles liposuctioned away and abdominal etching added to their stomachs, even if they do not admit it.

However, no matter how many men are not satisfied with their look, women still win this competition. For every plastic surgery performed on a men, nine are done on women.

Overall, almost 12 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in 2007, meaning a 7 percent increase from 2006 and a 59 percent increase from 2000. These surgeries add to another 5.1 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures performed last year.

On top five of cosmetic surgery were breast augmentation (348,000), liposuction (302,000), nose reshaping (285,000), eyelid surgery (241,000), and tummy tuck (148,000).

The number of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures also rose by 9 percent, to nearly 10 million procedures. On top five of these kinds of procedures were Botox (4.6 million), hyaluronic acid filters (1.1 million), chemical peel (1 million), laser hair removal (906,000), and microdermabrasion (897,000).

Only reconstructive plastic surgery procedures registered a decrease of 2 percent in 2007. On top five were tumor removal (3.9 million), laceration repair (286,000), scar revision (150,000), hand surgery (142,000), and breast reduction (106,000).
